Far From Ordinary Interview: Duke & Winston

Interview by Kyle Rheiner
Interview with: Seun Olubodun, Owner of Duke & Winston – Men’s Clothing

New Products from D&W

INK: What is your full name, age and where do you hail from?
SO: Seun Olubodun. 29. A couple places- Cheltenham, PA. Newcastle, England and Nigeria.

INK: What inspired you to get into the clothing and apparel industry?
SO: I admired the innovative and bold designs of streetwear labels but felt there was a hole in the market for young professionals who desired more subtle street-friendly fashion.

It seems like you’ve correctly identified that demographic. What is the current focus of the D&W brand? What kind of styles and designs does your brand focus on?
SO: My main focus is expanding out of t-shirts into a full clothing brand, so hats, ties, polos and other casual but very sellable items.

INK: Is there a specific piece in your new Winter Collection that you’re particularly excited about?
SO: The Hoodies. They have a lot of little details that have been a big hit so far.

INK: It’s the little things that count. So, what’s your favorite song or album to listen to when designing or printing?
SO: The Kinks on one end and Wu Tang Clan on the complete other end – any of their albums, I just add them all to a playlist and hit play.

INK: What’s your favorite city outside of Philly (can be global)? Why?
SO: New York because it’s a good place to find inspiration. Everything that you could want is at your finger tips. Its also close to Philly so I can get back home quick.

INK: What’s your favorite childhood breakfast cereal?
SO: A british cereal called Coco Pops. The American version are called Cocoa Krispies I think.
Coco Pops

INK: What’s the most embarrassing moment in the industry? (If none, most embarrassing childhood moment?)
SO: Trying to rush into a women’s line of t-shirts last year and after printing up like 300 different styles, every girl/women that saw them thought they were the worst things ever. I had picked the most unflattering colors and styles and barely sold any. I couldn’t even give the things away. I had to admit that I didn’t really know women like I thought which was pretty embarrassing.

INK: How do you feel about the Eagles 2011 season?
SO: Garbage. Next Question.

INK: Ok. Same topic. What do we do with Andy Reid – Fire now, Fire at end of Season, Leave him there?
SO: As long as we get rid of the Defensive Coordinator I think that Andy Reid, no matter what anyone thinks, will get another year to redeem himself, but only one year. The team isn’t bad and I think after the disaster that this year was, Andy has caught a lot of heat and it has to have lit a fire under him. Superbowl or you are out.

INK: I’d agree that Andy needs to make some changes if he wants to keep his job. What’s your favorite cartoon character and/or favorite comic strip illustrator/writer? What do you like best about this character and/or this writer?
SO: I really liked Tin Tin, which is funny because now they’re turning it into an American movie. I liked it because it was a kid and his dog and for some unexplained reason he would just travel around the world and solve crimes in the most exotic places. He was like a kid James Bond and we used to pretend we were like him as kids (we were strange kids).

INK: Coffee or tea? (If neither, what?)
SO: Tea. Earl Grey all the way.

INK: Maybe I should take a break from coffee. What is favorite hobby outside of this industry?
SO: Sleep, when I can get it. Also reading business books on people who have succeeded/failed in their various industries to learn how and why.

INK: Nothing beats sleep man. You had a great 2011, what’s next for D&W in 2012? Where do you want to take it?
SO: I just opened a small show room out of my apartment in Northern Liberties and the plan is to expand over the coming years and maybe have more stores. So focusing on that direction as opposed to wholesale and having to deal with stores and all that politics.

INK: We still need to make a stop to check it out. Where can we find your gear?
SO: 633 North 2nd Street. Philadelphia PA 19123. It’s right by the intersection of 2nd and Fairmount.
