FAR FROM ORDINARY INTERVIEW: CHRIS MORDI

the come up radio

WE SAT DOWN WITH CHRIS MORDI OF “THE COME UP RADIO” TO CHAT ABOUT WHO HE IS AND WHY WE CARE.  HE ALSO IS AN INTERN FOR XXL MAGAZINE AS WELL AS SLAM MAG. LET’S JUST SAY, HIS DAY IN THE OFFICE IS PROBABLY COOLER THAN MOST OF OURS.

INK: What is your full name, age and where do you hail from?

CM: My name is Christian Mordi, and I am from Montclair, New Jersey.

INK: What inspired you to get into radio and the music industry?

CM: We would be here all day answering this one..lol. Well I remember being a kid that was blessed to have my older cousins teach me early not to take whatever was played on the radio and run with that as the best. With that being said, when I was younger, I could still go and listen to a radioshow, with my tape deck ready and catch heat being broke live on the air. As I got older, that feeling was lost, now you hear the same 8 songs played all day really. I knew there was so much good music not getting exposed, so I decided to take action, do my own thing and start my show.

INK:  Thank you for switching it up for us.  What is the current focus of the your station?  What’s new for 2013?

CM:  Well my show is titled “The Come Up.” It is dedicated to underground rap and r&b artists on the rise. I also venture out sometimes and interview fresh clothing brands, video directors and producers.

I felt like the first year or so, my show I was finding myself on the air. Really experimenting with what I was doing, seeing what works and how to best interact with the listeners. In 2013, I plan on taking a lot that I have learned and take that to another level. That means stepping outside the booth some and hosting shows, mixtapes and doing other events.

INK: Is there a specific upcoming interview or project you’re particularly excited about?

CM: I get excited for every interview. There is no one at this point telling me who I have to interview. I run all facets of my show, I handle booking, choose music, etc. With that being said, all interviews are for a purpose, which is I feel you are onto something with your music. I want to find out what makes your music resonate with the fans so much.

I threw my first show in Philadelphia on April 11th at the Arts Garage. It was exciting to get out there and give the fans a chance to see some of their favorite underground artists perform live, and also host my own event.

INK: What’s your favorite song or album to listen to while driving?

CM: I would’t say I have a favorite song to listen to while driving, but “We Gonna Make It,” by Jadakiss and “I Get Up,” by J.Cole are some of my favorite songs ever. If I had to choose an album to listen to right now while driving and not turn, it would probably be “The Warm Up,” by J.Cole or “Good Kidd Maad City,” for the moment. I also love “The Listening” by Little Brother.

INK: Very cool.  Love me some Jadakiss.  What’s the coolest place you’ve been to? Why is this the coolest?

CM: The XXL Mag and SLAM office (where I work) are some of the coolest places I have ever been to. To walk in and see all of those iconic covers is truly amazing. I read both magazines as a kid and it’s a great feeling to live your dream.

A cool place also to me was going on my college campus the first day of my freshmen year. I didnt know anyone, and I was just walking around soaking it all in. It was a beautiful campus, and I was just so proud to be beginning my journey.

INK: What’s your favorite childhood breakfast cereal?

CM: Damn! Thats a hard one right here. I would probably have to go with Peanut Butter Crunch.. thats some good cereal right there..lol.

INK:  You didn’t see that one coming did you? haha   What’s the most embarrassing moment in the industry? (If none, most embarrassing childhood moment?)

CM: No real embarrassing moments yet in the industry, (thankfully) but as a kid I had a boatload of rough ones. My junior year I was guarding this 6’10 kid all game in the state playoffs. Game was tied and they ran a play to get him the ball, I got beat and I knew I had to foul him. He had two free throws to win the game. Probably one of the most intense and embarrassing moments of my life. Thankfully the kid missed both.

INK: BOTH?!?!?!  Who was it, Shaq? ha.    Are you an Eagles fan?  What’s their future looking like in your eyes?

INK: I am a Colts fan, but if I had to choose a team in the NFC it would probably be the Eagles due to the fact I can’t stand the Giants so much. I think they have a lot of very solid pieces, its all about utilizing them in the proper way.

INK: Well said.  What’s your favorite cartoon character and/or favorite comic strip illustrator/writer? What do you like best about this character and/or this writer?

CM: I loved “Doug” as a kid.  Low-key I think so many kids in my generation could relate to him or an character on that show so much. Doug was a down to earth good guy, who loved his friends, family and Patty Mayo…lol. My favorite part about him was he dreamed big, and I can most relate to Doug in that fashion. We should all dream big, and focus on turning those dreams into an reality.

INK: Coffee or tea? (If neither, what?)

CM: grew up on coffee, now I bang with tea only.

INK: What is favorite hobby outside of this industry?

CM: Well I love music, but I also love basketball. I played three years varsity at my high-school. I just love watching the game, and would love to branch out into coaching one day also.

INK: What’s next for The Come Up Radio?  Where do you want to take it?

CM: I am focused on building the site up stronger, so I pay a lot of attention to that. Hosting shows is something I am focused on next also and I plan on doing a lot of shows this summer. I dont see any limits with thecomeupradio.com. I can cover rap, r&b, fashion, production, while still hosting my own radioshow.  Maybe even one day I can take the movement to print.

INK: When and where can we hear your show/visit your website?

CM: You can hear my show Monday nights from 9pm to midnight on 88.7fm or gobrave.org. You can also visit my site at thecomeupradio.com. Follow me on twitter @mordi_thecomeup or follow the page for the site/show @thecomeupradio.
